#67 A new word...

penumbra  (p-nmbr)
Plural penumbras or penumbrae (p-nmbr)
1. A partial shadow between regions of full shadow (the umbra) and full illumination, especially as cast by Earth, the Moon, or another body during an eclipse. During a partial lunar eclipse, a portion of the Moon's disk remains within the penumbra of Earth's shadow while the rest is darkened by the umbra.
2. The grayish outer part of a sunspot.

Just learned this word today; don't know why I hadn't known of it before since it describes the kind of thing/phenomenon, that fascinates me. Makes me think of a "thin place" defined by light instead of geography.

I know this will show up in new work. How? Not quite sure yet. But I know I will know when the moment to give birth to it arrives. Something to think about as I go about my day...

The period when ideas are gestating is one of my favorites. I love the anticipation of what is to come.

Very much like holding Spring in my heart during Winter.

#66 Trying to find the right words...

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. - Mark Twain.

So what is the right word for a day like today?

Love. Love. And always Love.

Lightning it is, in all its shapes and forms, in all its quiet moments and joyful celebrations, in all its reaching and bending, in all its giving and taking and struggles to understand, in all its magical ability to soothe and embrace and comfort, and in all its miraculous power to heal and to make things right. Love.

Wishing each of you lightning.

Wishing each of you Love.

From my heart to yours: Love.

#65 Embracing silence...

I'm tired of the endless loop of talk-talk-talking offered by the talk-talk-talking heads - even the ones I "like".

We need silence to hear the heartbeat of our fellow beings and remember that they are just like us.

We need silence to help us remember that the notion of "the other" is an illusion.

We need silence so we can hear our souls speaking.

We need silence so we can hear the ancient wisdom that has not, nor will it ever, desert us.

We need silence to enfold us and bathe us in its healing peace.

Shhhh.... there... it's right there... inside you... feel it?

Remember.

Return often.

As we change, we change the world.

#64 New Work...

I've been simmering ideas for some new work for several months, and, after reading The Mist-Filled Path; Celtic Wisdom for Exiles, Wanders, and Seekers by Frank MacEowen, I headed to the studio. It was uncanny the way the ideas I had been thinking about blended perfectly with thoughts provoked by the book.

Here are the five pieces I've finished thus far:

Cruithear. 2011. Mixed media. 9x12 inches

Oran Mór. 2011. Mixed media.12x9 inches

Lectio Divina. 2011. Mixed media 12x9 inches

Shining Ones. 2011. Mixed media 9x12 inches

Rhiannon. 2011. Mixed media. 11x14 inches

I'm excited about these and have more works in mind. But for now I have to get these images on a CD and submitted to our local Arts center for jurying - in hopes of being selected to have a show (either solo or with another artist) sometime within the next two years. And while I'm at it, I think I'll also submit them for jurying for the PA sponsored The Art of the State 2011. I had three drawings selected for the show in 2006 but haven't submitted any work since then. The entry has been sitting on my desk for a month...

Fingers crossed!
