What is a studio?

Just found the lovely, lyrical work of artist May Luk online. I love what she wrote about her studio in her online journal:

There are few more powerful needs in the world than the need for a private place to work and think - a room that can bring comfort to the soul as much as the creative spirit. My studio embodies the moods and ideals that I aspire to.
